the service cannot..

hi , i have a problem which i think others have had, so hopefully you experts out there can point me in the right direction to hopefully cure it.... i started up my laptop this afternoon and windows was very slow starting, once on i went to update my anti virus ( Norton) where i received the message " the service cannot accept control messages at this time". i tried other programmes like windows defender and i got a similar message " encountered an error 0x80070425 the service cannot accept control messages at this time" some other programmes like convertx dvd work ok. i can also connect to the internet, but i cannot download ( i tried to download another anti virus) but it wouldn't let me. i hope that makes some sense, i must admit I'm a total novice on the wrong side of 40, so any advice would be very much appreciated

Welcome to Vista Forums.

For a test, uninstall Norton completely to see if it helps with your problem. There have been many reports of it not working well in Vista. If it does not uninstall cleanly, then use the Norton Removal Tool.

A good free alternative antivirus program is Avast.

hey, thanks for the welcome, and the quick reply
before i remove Norton, I've just done a system restore , which i had to do in safe mode because in normal mode i got the same error message, " the service cannot accept control messages at this time " so do you think its a " Norton " problem or is it something else, a virus perhaps? id just like to say that this is a problem that's just occurred, up until a few hours ago I've had no problems with vista at all. thanks again for the welcome, just found the site tonight, some very interesting stuff. will keep me busy for a few hours!

It's hard to say without uninstalling Norton as a test first. It has been reported to cause so many different problems in Vista.
