An application has expectedly quit.

Windows 3.x has come to the closing moments of its long life.

On 1 November Microsoft stopped issuing licences for the software that made its debut in May 1990 in the US.

The various versions of Windows 3.x (including 3.11) released in the early 1990s, were the first of Microsoft's graphical user interfaces to win huge worldwide success.

They helped Microsoft establish itself and set the trend for how it makes its revenues, and what drives the company until the present day.

Can't pass any comment about this as I only joined the PC world in late 1998 so my first experience was Windows 98, never even used the SE version. :D

I remember Windows 1.x on a game called Balance of Power. Windows 3.x was nice. I replaced it with IBM OS/2 and Warp.

Ah...the times of gloabal nuclear threat. You never knew if you would still exist the next day. Ah...such memories...

I remembered paying 1000 dollars for a huge case that came in with a huge floppy diskette drive and the new MS DOS. Upgrading to Windows 3.1 was uncharted territory for sure! :eek:

Ah ... windows 3.11 a working network operating system from Microsoft - Well I believed them... I was young(er) then ... At least it was better than DOS!

No hard drive or color graphics. I did have basic and basica (advanced basic).

This was mine, a ZX80, built from a kit. I bought it in 1980 for, I think, about $40

I know a family I used to baby sit for, they had a Commander(sp) 64 but I never tried it and at one time we had I believe it was Amstrad, that was a monitor and like keyboard and the games that came with it were on cassettes. I think you could write programs for it by typing in all this code, never got anything to actually work :huh: and I know that we had borrowed at one time a Sinclair ZX to play games.

The kids were using computers at school so we bought one in September 1998, that came with Windows 98 and had a massive 2.1GB hard drive with 32MB RAM, I think that was the RAM I don't think it was 64GB. That cost us just over a £1,000 and that was the first time I'd used what we call today a computer
