Why are you limited to 5 days when you want to pick a restore date?? why can't I go back 5 weeks?

The most common reason is that you do not have enough space reserved for restore. As the space gets full the older points are deleted.

Oh, I see, I thought it was something to do with "Recovery 'D' which on my PC shows 5.84GB free of 9.99GB but I assume this does not include all my files etc, thanks for the link I will check it out.

Based upon that name you might be looking at the recovery partition used to reinstall windows. If so I wouldn't touch it.

The above shows how to set the max size used by shadow storage. By default i believe Vista uses 15% of the system partition size.

Thanks guys I have had a very quick look at the links but where is a particular restore point located on the HD and would it be possible to copy and paste a restore point to an external hard drive and then use from that location?

Hello Mich,
In case you want to restore the computer to a restore point, you would have to select the date from the same computer. The restore points cannot be backed up on to an external hard drive and be selected to restore the PC.
