System Restore ?

I gave up on my Toshiba disk and in July formatted the hard drive and did clean install with a Vista Home Premium retail disk. A week ago Microsoft's Mail guy, since a new User Account hadn't fixed my problem with adding signatures, said I had to do an inplace upgrade repair. A Vista guy walking me through it, doing something fancy to uninstall SP1 as my disk didn't have it, uninstalling my antivirus and disk burning programs. Took four hours.

As a result, my authority settings were all changed, power settings, etc. A Toshiba program wouldn't run, saying I had limited authority (I am only user so am administrator). He couldn't fix it, uninstall and reinstall didn't work, call Toshiba he said after two hours. But in the meantime I noticed by the clock my network was x'd out and there was a message "server unknown" or something like that. He said I had to talk to a network guy about that.

I decided to just to system restore. It took at least two hours. Finally, it restarted and said restore was successful. I immediately came here to check out how to run sfc /scannow and saw that I'd logged on 44 minutes before. At that time system restore was running.

Sounds like a virus/Trojan/whatever but I run Avast and had just finished running Malwarebytes AntiMalware program and regularly run A squared, Spybot S&D etc.

What could cause such a slow restore and the odd message about my having been logged on?
