System Restore

A quick question in regards to system restore. I was wondering if it was possible to disable the automatic creation of restore points so that I could make restore points when I want them and not have to worry about them being overwritten by meaningless restore points I'll never use. If this isn't possible are there any decent freeware programs that I could use that would allow me to do this so I could turn of vistas system restore? Because I like to be safe but vista's over the top restore point system I find quite irritating.

Sorry, I never answered the question.

Go to "Control Panel", (classic view) "Administrative Tools", "Task Scheduler"
Provide credentials for the UAC prompt.
Top left; click "View", tick "Show Hidden Tasks".
Expand to and click on "System Restore" and delete the task.

Make sure this is what you want to do; before you do it.

Yeah I don't want to completely turn it off. I just would like to have it where I decide when I want to make restore points and not vista because vista might overwrite restore points that I consider crucial. I guess the question is can I do that with vista or is there a third party software that would allow me to do this.

Okay I turned off the daily restore points I think that should be pretty good. Thank you for your help I believe I have it set the way I want. I guess I'll I have to wait and see.

Hello again.

Might I suggest that you use this http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/72805-system-restore-point-shortcut.html to create restore points as needed.
You can add it to the desktop as a shortcut, a 'one click' restore point creator.
You can also add it to the "Start Menu", Startup Folder" as I have done to have the
option to be prompted to create a restore point whenever the machine is booted up.

Ponder this: You make system resotres once a week - but in that week you install 3 pieces of new software, and you AV updates itself and adds a new component and modifies the registry, and then on top of that you change many settings in Windows.

You plan on making a new restore point tomorrow - but all of a sudden your computer needs a restore *today*.

Your last restore point is going ot be before *all* of these actions.

Are you going to remember every single one of them?

True thats a good point. It just that suppose I make a manual restore point before I do something major. What I did cause problems but they don't begin to show themselves for a few weeks. I look for the restore point I made and its been overwritten from me turning my computer on. I guess thats the scenerio I want to prevent, but you also make a good point I guess I'm just trying to find a balance.
