There are many instances of this problem reported on the net, but no real solutions. It is possible the problem is not related to Vista per ce but is in a driver. What programs do you have loaded. Does the problem occur when switching one way? ie User A to B, but not from User B to A. Is the reboot associated with a blue screen?

Switching user or logging off causes vista to reboot.

I have Pinnacle studio 12, avast antivirus and Ad-Aware, but these programs were running before the problem started. It does not matter which way I switch. Yes, reboot is associated with blue screen.

One thing worth mentioning, the problem does not occur in SAFE MODE.

Sorry to be a while getting back. "Safe Mode" doesn't load any drivers. The problem is either with Drivers, you could try updating your Graphics card driver, or a nastie. I suggest you do a full virus scan and also run the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool just to be safe. Another thing to look at is what had been installed prior to the problem occurring, including MS updates. Were there any driver updates?
