svchost.exe using 120+ mb ram.

Hi,
First of all, i have 13 svchosts running. I seem to recall around 3 in windows xp 32. Is this normal?
Second, one of the svchost.exe's is ALWAYS using 120+ mb of ram. This can hardly be right, can it?

Just checked my system, I have 12 running using about 100mb.

So i have an extra svchost.exe and it uses 120+ mb ram.
I've used the 'goto file location' and it is infact the same svchost.exe as the 12 other ones in my process list.
I was abit worried it might have been some virus, disguised as svchost.exe.

Try using Microsofts Process Explorer:- http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx

This will tell you just what is using each svhost instance.

Thank you, that is a cool tool. However, it doesn't show the memory usage of the processes, and the task manager doesn't show the pids, so i have no idea which one it is.

Actually i managed to figure it out, i think.
I checked the used memory of the process, and this one looks like it is the one.

You can memory columns from view-->columns then tick the boxes for any extra info you need.

You can also set task manager to show pids using the same method as above.

If you hover you mouse over the svhost process in the left pane it will tell you what service is using the process.

Aaaah, then it seems like it's the DWM (Desktop Windows Manager) that's using all the memory of this process. It is currently using 128 and the svchost.exe itself is up to 155 mb now.
