Strange Corruption - Jpeg & WMV

Vista Ultimate 32bit, Intel Core Duo, RAID, Geforce 7600GT

After about 3 months of running Vista, I was running through my photos and noticed that 1 or 2 of them had black thumbnails. When trying to open them there appeared to be some sort of corruption. I downloaded Jpeg Recovery2 and could see that the top of the first image was chopped off and the the second image only had the top 1/5th. I loaded both files into Text Edit Pro and could see that the first file had a load of data from Itunes ie. Itunes 4.x.x, Now Music 32, a song name etc.

I freaked as I have over 40Gb of family pictures and don't want to lose any of them. Well, I had a backup on a seperate XP box and started to copy the replacements over. Now this was strange as it sometimes didn't fix the thumbnail or the image.

That worried me, so I've reverted back to XP as I couldn't find anything like it on the forums.

My father also has a Vista Ultimate machine and he had me look at his machine over the weekend. He's got a number of Windows Media Videos in his Pictures directory and all the thumbnails were black. No problem I thought. Tried clicking on them, they'd start in Windows Media Player but no Video just Audio.

His machine is the completely different to mine - AMD Dual Core, 6600 GT, RAID.

Any ideas what is going on?

BTW, I blew his machine back to XP

I have seen this before as far as the videos go with Windows XP. You need the correct video codec installed it seems to have the thumbnail for the video to appear. Prolly a divx codec from divx.com. I'm not sure on the jpeg though.
