Start up issues

Ok so I've been dealing with this problem for the last 3 mos and it's beyond annoying. I'm sorry if this is a repeated topic but I stumbled onto this forum and I hope I'll be able to get some help here goes....

I have a Gateway MT6821 laptop with Vista 32 bit SP1 installed.

When I power on the start up screen with the "Gateway" logo the bar at the bottom loads half way and then shuts off. It does this repeatedly even though I've disabled the auto restart. I usually go through pressing F8 100 times before getting to the startup options. Then I usually select "Last known start up" or something to that effect. Sometimes it works and Vista will start sometimes the system will just shut off again. I've tried to do startup repair with the system recovery disc. It will say loading windows files and shut off when it gets to the blinking cursor. Sometimes it will reach the cursor and a bunch of crazy characters will appear at the top of the screen and will stay frozen until I restart the system. I've even gotten messages saying "The file is possibly corrupt. The file header checksum does not match the computed checksum". I've tried everything I can think from uninstalling 3 mos worth of updates to trying to update drivers. The oddest thing is that I'm not able to load the system recovery disc like I've done in the past.

Welcome
Several things to try
First make a full anti virus scan
Download and make a full scan with malwarebytes. Be sure to update first.
If clean
Try a clean boot
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Go to search and type device manager. In manager look for any yellow warning markers or dirvers that are out of date. Especially the vital drivers such as graphics.

Edit some of these solutions were mentioned above. We were typing at the same time.

Try to repair corrupted files with an sfc command

Finally a repair install may be required.

If that does not work try in safe mode as a test and report back
