start up error

My Sony Vaio laptop froze and i had to hold the power button to restart it. It got stuck on the screen where there is a bar on the bottom with something sliding across. It goes to a blue screen with the error " Stop : 0x000000ED" and Unmountable_Boot_Volume. Vista came on the computer when i bought it this spring, i haven't added anything new to it with in a month before this happened, disc drive has nothing in it. Anyone know how to fix this or what causes it? Tryed to run safemood and all of the other options, the onlything i haven't done yet is to use the system restore disc.

Stop 0xED is either a failing hard disk, or corrupted a NTFS volume. I've just fixed an XP mach a few days ago exibiting the same problem.

If possible, boot the computer from you recovery disk, and enter the recovery console (THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS USING THE BOOT DVD TO RECOVER THE WINDOWS INSTALLATION - SO USE CAUTION). The Recovery Console is a sort of stripped down version of the command prompt.

I'm not near a Vista machine now (other than my own), and I can't restart right now to confirm how to enter the recovery console from the boot DVD.

Run CHKDSK from the recovery console to attempt a repair (use CHKDSK /? for command line options to initiate a repair check).
