This folder and its contents, e.g., searchsettings.exe is said to be malware, but it is passed by AVG. It cannot be deleted, needing permission. The search settings popup comes up every time log on.

Same thing happened on another computer with Win 7, but it could be deleted.

Any ideas?

It found 348 infections! Three associated with spigot, (which were the only ones checked), several involvilng PUP.Dealio, and around 300 involving my nemesis, WhiteSmoke: PUP.WhiteSmoke.

Should I proceed?

See if you can delete them with Malwarebytes. You will not be any worse than you are now.

it didn't remove them directly, but apparently did something, as I was able to delete them all manually.

OK Do this
Run a full and upated anti virus scan
Run malwarebytes and run
Eset online anti virus. If all are clean, I think you are ok.
If you want to be double sure, post and an expert will double check, but the the above first.
