SP1 repair problem

I recently allowed Windows to apply SP1 to my Vista 32 bit Business edition which proved to be a big mistake as it now refuses to boot.

I cannot boot up in safe mode either - it stops at crcdisk.sys

I have a full installation disk and a recovery disk and neither of these will load. The disk boots but aborts part way through (although not always at the same place). I have another machine belonging to my son which has the same hardware and I cannot load the installation or recovery disks on that either although its OS is fine.

There doesn't seem to be much wrong with the hardware because it boots into my old XP disk quite happily.

Has anyone got any ideas other than format the hard disk!
