sound problems on external screen

when i want to watch movies which are avi files on my lcd tv using an hdmi cable, i am unable to get sound from the tv, so i am watching the film on my tv but the sound comes from my laptop. i know that i can get the sound from my tv as i have done in the past but i have no idea why i cant now. please can any one help:(

The video will come from the HDMI but the actual sound needs to be connected by another cable from the speaker jack to the Tv. There is nothing wrong with the set up it is just how things are now with that and a laptop. Hook up the extra cable from the speaker jack to the TV and you will or may have to set up the TV speakers to accept that as the sound source.

if you are right why have i been able to watch these films with the sound from my tv in the past, and ive only had my laptop 8 months. i thought a hdmi cable was for picture and sound? Thanks for your input anyway mike, will give it a go if i dont get any joy.

When connected using HDMI, have you checked the Vista audio playback settings and made sure it is set to HDMI?

no i have not checked this setting so thanks for suggesting this, now im going to sound really thick, i have looked for this setting and have been unable to find it, could you help with this aswell please. thanks mike

Quickest way, right click on the speaker in the systray and select "Playback Devices", then make sure it is set to the HDMI out as default.

thanks for your help stormy13, after following your instructions i noticed that my high definition driver was not working so i reinstalled it and everything is working fine now, once again thanks for your help. :) i new it was something i had done because it was working before.
