Some Weird Desktop Shortcut Icon Issues
If you're going through hell, keep going

Since installing IE8 RTM in Vista SP1 x86 I've been having some problems with internet shortcut icons not displaying correctly on my desktop.
I've tried deleting and redoing them, tried using AM Deadlink to refresh my Favourites icons to no avail. They show normally in Favourites but show as a smaller version within a white frame on the desktop. This doesn't seem to effect all of them, just some.
I've attached two thumbnails to illustrate what I mean. The first one is the Canada Post item in Favourites and the second one is the same shortcut on the desktop. As you can see there there's another one doing the same thing for Newegg.ca.
I think I am right in saying that it's not a case of rebuilding the system icon cache as that only effects system icons, am I right?
FYI desktop resolution is 1680 x 1050 and I have the desktop icon size set to Classic.
So any ideas folks?

Maybe it shows the favicon in the shortcut instead of the IE symbol.

That's what it's supposed to show. My question is why is the favicon so tiny inside the white border?

Just a thought, I'm using IE8 but with Vista SP2 x86.
Could it be IE8 doesn't like SP1.

I doubt that but it's a thought, thanks. I've managed to restore some. I've repeatedly cleared my cache, temp files etc. but I should really need to do that as I've got loads of resources.
The rest just refuse to change from the blank "white piece of paper with a fold on one corner" type image. despite the correct icons showing in Favorites.

I think I've tried most of those already Shawn but thanks anyway. I just cleared out everything again and started over...same thing. The favicons either show as white or white with a mini-version of the actual favicon in the middle. But only for some sites - weird. I'm not too happy with IE8 to be honest - I find it slow and even in compatability mode many websites that are behind the times don't work properly.
Shame really because, as much as I like Firefox, I prefer the look of IE.

Well I gave up wondering why some sites worked OK and others, including this one and Win7 Forums didn't and changed the icons. Fortunately I found the identical icons elsewhere.
Now I'm happy but not enthralled by IE8 RTM needless to say. The trouble is, I prefer IE simply because of the ease of creating shortcuts. To do the same in Firefox is like major heart surgery.
