Software Installation Issues

Hello, I just found these forums and now hope that you may be able to help me out with a very perculiar problem I'm having.

I use Windows Vista, and have done so without any major problem. That is, until now.

Whenever I try to install a software from a CD/DvD or a downloaded file, it will give me an error. If I use a downloaded setup program, it tells me the file is corrupt. It does so with every file, even ones I've had no problems with before. The same happens when I try to install through my DvD Drive. It tells me that it cannot read the installation right away.

This problem occured only a week ago, when my hard drive suddenly went defect. I turned off my computer and went away from a good six hours, came back, and then my hard drive had apparently died in the meantime. I sent it to get it repaired, and it was determined that the hard drive was defect, and they had given me a new one. Alright, awesome. I install Windows Vista without problems (except some error I can't remember when it tried to update Vista during the installation, I believe).

That is when I got the before-mentioned problem about installing software. I had no issues installing the drivers needed for my motherboard's network card. But anything else turns out to give me some kind of error.

I have never seen anything like this, and cannot possibly begin to determine what's wrong. It happened also when I put in a different hard drive as the boot device before I sent the computer in to be repaired, so I'm quite positive that it's the machine, and not Windows Vista. I somehow suspect my motherboard to have been affected by the hard drive that suddenly went defect.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I have no idea where to even start.

i can give you a few suggestion, but they are all just shots in the dark, really.

are you sure the hard drive was replaced, and not just reformatted?
are your hard drive and dvd on seperate channels?
memory seated properly?
run a memory diagnostic
clean out all temp folders
run chkdsk
scan for viruses
try saving downloads to a different location
install your original system drivers
check for loose/faulty cables between drives and motherboard

If you end up thinking it is not hardware related, I suggest you re-install Vista again. As you did this recently, it would probably be fairly easy (?). If you do that, make sure you disconnect the internet first. After installing, go into the control panel and set windows update not to install automatically and reconnect internet. Then install the updates a few at the time manually with reboot in between.

I'm not exactly sure how to do some of those things, like doing the memory diagnostic and chkdsk, and I have to go look for those temp folders.

I can't install an anti-virus program and I already checked the cables. But I'm certainly going to look into it.

I actually tried to re-install Windows Vista, but I couldn't. I get the very same reading error as I do with any other software. And I don't even know how to uninstall it completely, as I'm no computer whiz. But the problem is, before I got a new hard drive (yes, a brand new one), I actually jacked in my old hard drive which I already had used Vista on. That's when I discovered the problem I'm having, but I was hoping it was just THAT hard drive, which it wasn't.

Been thinking at your problem. Would you have any exclamation mark on any device in the Device Manager? Do you have any particular recurring error in the Event log? Both available through Start - right click on 'Computer' and choose "Manage".

Yes, the SM-buscontroller gives me an exclamation mark. But only that one.

Though, I wonder if it's absolutely safe to remove all the files within the temp folder, as suggested earlier?

On a side note: when I try to manually install the updates, I get an error called "Code 80070057".

Bus controller: I would try to find out why this is. What is the error? Probably not related to the real issue, but who knows...

Deleting temp files should normally be safe. Will try to get some time too look into your error code. Will be travelling for a couple of days though.

Hi

Two places you can look. First event viewer (type event in search) look in the windows logs>app tab for errors that relate to this problem.

Second go into device manager (type device manager in search) and look for any unknown devices (with yellow triangle). If wither exist please let us know

It's telling me that it's missing its driver. I tried to search for it online, but to no avail. I had no luck doing it locally either.

This could be quite a problem. If you publish you system specs someone may be able to help you with this.
