SM56Helper Error

I am getting an error dialogue box popping up repeatedly. The box label is "SM56Helper Error." The message is, "Telephone signal not detected, please check connection." I do not have a telephone line attached to my system. Although it doesn't appear that any harm is being done, having the message continously popping up is distracting. It pops up at random intervals throughout my session and I always have to close the box twice. Anyone else have this problem? I'm on Vista Ultimate 64 bit, running on HP Pavilion Entertainment PC.

"SM56Helper" is the Motorolla based driver for the modem in your pc. Evidently It is trying to dial out, and because of the lack of telephone signal cannot.

The question here you should be asking yourself is "what is trying to use the modem to dial out?" What antivrus/antimalware program(s) are you running?, are you using UAC? and have you checked your "Network Connections" to see if a dial up network has been established? If one has been, you can disable this network, but if it is due to malware, disabling it may become a secondary concern.

The problem stopped for about a week and I thought it had "fixed" itself. Not so. It is now back as random and often as before. I checked my Network settings and there are no connections. Rats!
