Slow startup

I am a XP user and use a third party startup manager to load programs at startup. Works fine.
My brother asked me to look at why his Vista computer was slow at startup. ( the load progress bar cycles about 30 times at startup.) Is a third party manager able to manage the startup programs or does Vista have a built in manager?

What else should I check to speed up his startup?

click start then run , type msconfig and hit return , its all there under the startup tab , also under services there are more BUT make sure you check the hide all microsoft services tab first , and make sure you dont stop the antivirus/firewall etc

one more thing , make sure he hasnt disable the READYBOOST service , if he has tell him to turn it back on , it incorporates a sevice called READYBOOT , i assume you can work out what that does

And disable SuperFectch - Individual apps may load a bit slower, but this will speed the boot up by a significant amount of time.

Also, anti-malware software (and especially those which run in real time) will also slow the boot process up.

Finally, if he has a lot of *applications* (not shortcuts, but the programs themselves) on his desktop - that includes stuff he has downloaded to the desktop to install at some point- get rid of them - the larger the size of the Desktop folder the long it takes to boot as those files get scanned and then explorer checks them to see if they are images or videos so it can display the appropriate icon....
