Slow reaction on some programs

Hi...

I just build myself a new PC and shiftet from:

Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz
2 GB RAM
ATI X1800XL
(Vista Ultimate x86)

to

Intel Core i7-920
6 GB RAM (triple channel)
ATI X1800XL (A new one on is on it's way)
(Vista Ultimate x64)

what worries me a bit is... Some programs reacts slower on my new PC than on the old. Ex. Filezilla takes around 5 sec. to open on my new, but pops up instantly on my old.

Any idea of what I'm doing wrong here?

I'm not an expert, but it may just be because you've migrated to a 64-bit OS.
You have to remember, most popular software is written 32-bit with only some porting to 64-bit.
With a 64-bit OS, it takes twice the memory to execute a 32-bit app (I think).

That was somewhat what I thought... But hoped the massive hardware upgrade would take care of that. It just sounds crazy my 4 year old machine is a better for most tasks.

I read I wouldn't get the full potential of the i7 if i chose Vista x86, but would you say I could get better performance with that?

Stick with the 64bit version.

Have you looked to see if there is a newer version of filezilla.

List what other programs are running slow.

Have you downloaded all the updates for Vista?
Has the version of Vista you installed come with SP1?

Your new machine is sufficiently beastly to ensure that everything should be faster, irrespective of "bitness". If you can actually count the lag in seconds, there's something else going on.

You mentioned Filezilla. Never used it, but I assume it's an app with a window that pops open after you double-click the shortcut, and that in this case it's taking 5sec to do so. My guess is that you've got some sort of filter which is interfering with the app's initialisation.

Does the same 5sec opening delay happen if you boot to [safe mode] or [safe mode + net]? If not, you might want to test what happens if you uninstall your anti-virus and non-default firewall, if any. They're the sorts of components which would be interested in injecting code into a "downloader" process, so they'd be the most obvious reasons for differences in behaviour between normal and safe modes.

It's not a big problem... I just wanted to hear if it's normal. So after what I've heard, I'll stick with the x64.

A 32-bit process running under a 64-bit OS consumes the same amount of memory it did under a 32-bit OS. It actually still believes it's running in a 32-bit environment (it wouldn't know how to run in a 64-bit one), so there's no reason for it to modify its behaviour.

It's not normal. Sustained in-game performance degradation to the point where a P4 feels faster than an i7 playing Crysis is way over in the "abnormal" end of the scale. Heck, I didn't think it was actually possible to play Crysis on a P4

Video drivers updated? Does it happen if you uninstall the AV (disabling it is not a valid test)? At some point an add-on of some sort was introduced which is slowing things right down to a very perceptible level.

Certainly, I agree completely with Roy69 that you should stick to 64-bit apps whenever possible, but you should also be experiencing far better perf out of your 32-bit software with the new box. The fact that you count delay in seconds for operations which were near-instantaneous before makes me absolutely certain that there's a problem.

Heck, I didn't think it was actually possible to play Crysis on a P4

I was very surprised too... It played on around 25 fps on Medium, 1600x1200 and no AA or AF, and believe it or not, that was before I upgraded from 1 to 2 GB RAM. I can barely pull a Medium now .

Hopefully we can figure out what's wrong.

Actually now you mention AV, I just started using Kaspersky AV 2009. But would that kill my games too? I'll try to uninstall it and see what happens.

All is up to date, it's an fresh install, only 2 days old.

Disconect from the internet and uninstall any of the following you have on your pc:

i-tunes
anything by google eg google toolbar, chrome, google desktop etc
your antivirus

Next open up windows defender and delete every startup entry except for the two microsoft ones Microsoft Windows Explorer and Microsoft Userinint Logon Application

See if the problem still exists after doing that, if it does then install your antivirus and come back here.

I'd suggest tackling this one symptom at a time. There's no guarantee of a single underlying cause for everything, at least not at present.

Does filezilla take 5sec to open in safe mode?

OK now that youv reduced the apps at startup and cleared away known trouble apps try starting in safe mode like H2SO4 suggested and see if the problem exists in safe mode.

If it still happens click the links in my sig and do everything there. Then after all that see if it still happens.
