Slow internet?!

Recently, I have switched from a Sony Vaio FE41S (2GB/667MHz - Windows XP) to a Dell Inspiron 1545 (3GB - Windows Vista Basic). On my Vaio, I can watch things online such as Sky Player online and TVCatchup, however, on my brand new Dell, the pictures on these websites moves horrifically slow, maybe 1 frame every 10 or 20 seconds, and slows down my entire computer. As soon as I close these things, my computer runs completely fine again. Also, my downloads go between 100-200kb, whereas on my Vaio, they go between 700 and 1,100kbps

I located a few of these problems - McAfee, which I deleted, and this helped to speed up my computer in general, however, I still have not been able to use such websites. I have tried many of the fixes suggested online, such as the various netsh things and getting rid of phishing on IE. I don't have any antivirus anymore and I've checked for things such as viruses and malware.

I am getting very frustrated that I cannot view these websites without practically crashing my computer!! Dell haven't been able to help and I will happily pay money to solve this problem!

My Vaio has a 802.11a/b/g and my Dell has a Dell Wireless 1397 802.11g Half Mini-Card, connecting to a 20 Megabit Virgin router.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Welcome to the Forum

We will be able to help you if you post the specs of the Dell.

In the meantime, type, event viewer in search. Then look for any errors about the time this happened.

Make sure your video card is sufficient and working properly.

Look for drivers that are not working properly, by going to device manager and looking for yellow markers.

Update all applicable drivers.

New does not mean it is not a hardware problem

If it is brand new, I would return it (or at least call) and put the responsobilty on Dell.
A new computer should work properly.

3GB Memory
32 bit Vista Home Basic(SP1)
802.11g DELL Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini Card
Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family (Integrated graphics card)

what else do I need to add?

Also, I have tested out this website: http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?flash=1
and I had speeds of 2110kbps download and 425kbps upload, and I've read that this means that it is infact a problem with my laptop rather than my connection?? I have also tried Firefox 3, driver updates, removing mcafee and other dell preinstalled stuff..

Thanks in advance for any more assistance..

I have disabled all services except Microsoft and I don't think I need them anyway so I'm going to leave them all off! My speeds have rocketed and I can now watch everything relatively well!!

Thank you so much for taking your time to help me out.

Regards.

Why not follow the instructions of the clean boot and find out which service causes the problem. Each service has a purpose.
