I have been wrestling with a problem for a couple of weeks now.
My set-up here at home is that I have a linux pc and a vista dell laptop which are both directly connected to a router and then to the internet. THe laptop is about 8 months old and has given my decent performance on the internet (which is 8Mbps). That was until about 3 weeks ago when things slowed down considerably. I have no idea why it has slowed down.
Download speeds to my Linux PC are consistent at about 6600Kbps. Vista now manages c.150Kbps when I start up firefox (which has about a dozen tabs to load) to a miserable 10Kbps when browsing around. It is now getting intolerable. When I move a bunch of files between the Linux PC and the Vista laptop I get a thtoughout of 13Mbps. The above has led me to concentrate on the Vista laptop's interaction with the internet at the sole problem that needs addressing.
Here is what I have done:
1. I am confidenet that I have no virus or spyware etc.
2. I have monitored the tcp connections via tcpview and see nothing awry currently (I did however stop some peer-to-peer programs that were there and sharing as a side effect from installing BBC iPlayer)
3. I am using NetMeter to monitor performance - this is where the stats come from above
4. I have disabled autotuning on the interface
5. I have disabled QoS on the interface (as per the article on here)
6. I have disabled at startup all chat programs etc.
7. I have stopped the Windows Defender service
8. I have no anti-virus, spyware or firewall sw running. (AFAIK)
Anyone have any ideas pls?
Happy to post any config details, just tell me what to type to get them.
Thanks a lot
