Solved Shutting Down Question

Because my computer goes to sleep but will not wake (I talked about this before -- don't want to go over that again -- nothing works), I've been leaving it on all the time. I don't trust hypernation, since the sleep mode doesn't work properly.

This problem may be caused by surges/glitches occuring via the cable modem (altho I really don't know what is causing it). This morning I worked on it for bout 1/2 a hour (it was working fine) but I came back a couple hours later to a frozen comp that I had to force boot via the surge protector (could not turn it off any other way). Luckily, I have Acronis backup which has saved this machine two times now within 4 months. I was able to boot using the Acronis rescue disk and restored a backup.

My question -- is there any reason why I should not shut down everynite or when I am away from the machine for any length of time?

I know shutdown is not recommended because Vista does things on its own like update programs such as Defender and Norton ISecurity (I turned off the auto d/l and install feature in windows -- I want to see what it plans to d/l and install, etc.) but I can do all the updates manually.

Is shutting it down a cause for concern re: wear and tear on the machine?

Thanx

Hi Frizz,

It will not hurt anything to shutdown your computer when you will not be on it for a while. It is just not recommended to shutdown and startup the computer each time while you are on and off the computer a lot. Sleep mode is of course the most common method used for desktops since it is just more convenient.

I leave my machine on 24 / 7 / 365. I simply turn the screen off and let the PC run a distrubuted processing project while im gone ( Seti@Home, Distributed.net RC5-72 contest, etc. Lots of worth while projects to lend your idle PC time too)

Thanx for your replies.

I think the safest bet for me is to shut down the comp at nite and when I'm away for an extended period. It's annoying that I have to do that since it has sleep and hibernation modes but its the only way I can be sure it won't suffer a seizure during the nite.

I'd suggest purchasing a higher quality surge protector with co-ax protection as well.

Thanx Cyberwolf. Your post jogged my memory and I dug thru some of my computer stuff and I found the Belkin 12 outlet surge protector with co-ax that my honey bought when I got the new computer in Jan. of this year. I forgot I had it. Now I'll have to get under my desk when everything is off and clean the dust and connect up the protector. Maybe if I would have done that right away, my comp would not have experienced the problems I expressed?
