Shut down problem

Hi All,

My cousin is having an issue with her computer at the moment, when she goes to shut down the computer (start, turn off, turn off) and the computer then does what it needs to do to shut down safely, thens shuts down, a light comes back on.
(I cant seem to be able to draw it so hopefully my explaination of it is ok.)
It has a square ontop of a line in between two other squares.
Her computer is an acer - aspire, intel, OS is windows xp.

Any thoughts?

Is this light on the monitor screen? Is it a desktop? When you shut down a desktop, but do not turn off the monitor, the monitor will go to sleep. I have never seen these squares. Usually there is a message that the monitor is going to sleep or maybe a no signal message.

Hi Gary,

Sorry. The light that comes on, after you go through the process of shutting down the computer and the computer shuts down completely, is on the tower. I asked a work colleague about it and he said that it may be an issue with the network - i am assuming for interent etc.
Thanx for replying and sorry for the confusion, i should of made sure that all fellow forum members could follow what i was saying.

I wouldn't know what that's about, but have you looked in the manual for your comp. Usually some stuff in there about what the lights mean.

Hi Jasper,

Is your cousin's desktop connected to the Internet via an Ethernet cable, and if so, does this light disappear if the cable is unplugged?

Hi Dwarf,

Yes, at the moment the desktop is connected to the internet via the ethernet cable. Yes when i unplug the ethernet cable the light with the symbol does disappear.

This makes me wonder whether i have set up the network connection properly for broadband..... she is on dial up, so when we installed antivirus and downloaded 51 high priority updates from microsoft, i broght the computer around to my place and connected to the internet via the ethernet so that it didnt take so long for the downloads etc. (The desktop was hardly connected to the internet, due to her sons bringing viruses home from school via usb device.).

Have i done this wrong?

Hi Jasper,

When you shut down your PC, it is not completely off. By that I mean that the stand-by circuitry is still working. It is that which enables a system to be remotely awakened, typically via LAN. If you look at the back of your system where the Ethernet cable is plugged in, you should see 1 or 2 flashing LEDs on the socket. Notice how these stay active even when you power the system down.

Ok i see what you mean with the LED light/s at the back where the ethernet cable is plugged in is still on. So can i breathe a sigh of relief that i havent buggered the computer? Do i need to do something about this?

Hi Jasper,

No, it's nothing to worry about as it's pretty much standard. If you don't want your system to be able to be woken up, check the WOL (Wake On Lan) setting in the BIOS and set it to Disabled or Off. You could also switch the power off at the wall socket as well when you are not using your system (assuming that you are shutting it down and not putting it in to stand-by mode).

(no i havent been putting it into standby mode - well i dont think so as i hit turn off twice).
