Shut down multiple windows all at once...how?

I have icons on Quick launch for I.E, switch between windows and 3D cascade, and minimizing all windows..but none for shutting them all at once. What is the three key comnbination for this? Any other handy key combos for other tricks?

Hurry, my taskbar is full!

Oh, coolnewyorker. I don't know the combo but why don't you just unlock the taskbar, pull the seperator towards the icons to cover them up and just click the white arrow to access them. Or uncheck quick launch from the toolbar context menu.

I don't know if there is a key combination but you could unlock the taskbar and drag it up too.

Hurry, my taskbar is full!

If you're talking about closing multiple open programs at once, I'm not aware of any single hotkey solution, but this has worked for me:

  1. Hold down the <CTRL> key while you click on each of the taskbar buttons for the applications you want to close
  2. When you have selected all those you want, right-click on any of the selected taskbar buttons, then select "close group"
Sorry I can't post screenshots of how to do this, but I'm in a bit of a hurry to get to work. I'll see what I can do this evening when I get home.

What a bunch of crap. I just joined this forum and just wrote a long, detailed reply to a post. After I submitted it I was informed that the post was over 89 days old and could not reply to it, and when I went back a page to copy what I had written to use on another postmy reply had been erased. I feel like I've been jerked around.

Welcome to the Forums Tim.
First of all, before replying to a post, check that it is still active. Another suggestion in preparing long and detailed posts, is to do your initial draft and preparation in something like Microsoft Office Wordpad [offline even], and save your draft. That way you retain a copy if anything untoward happens. Then its just a matter of copy and paste where you want.

In addition to this, if you have spent a lot of time preparing your post, the webpage may time out your login and do the same thing.

I always prepare my answer, select all and then copy before I hit the submit reply button, that way, if it bombs, I still have it on my clipboard and can re paste it into the reply dialog again.

I agree Jim and I also forgot to suggest, that before you do anything else Tim, go to the top of the page and make yourself aware of all the Forum workings by clicking into FAQ. This is your main guide so to speak. In reality, this thread is not the place for this comment as it is 'off-subject', and may get moved. If you can't find a thread that generally is of the same subject that you wish to address, then create your own.

Alt+F4 will close programs even if they are not maximized....

Alt+TAB will allow you to select different windows....

But here is a really kewl feature most don't know about....

Alt+Tab to select the app you want to close, and without letting go of the Alt key, press F4 - poof, it goes away. You can keep doing this until the Alt Tab list is empty, of course....

That what happens when you try to use <ALT>+<F4> to close the taskbar. If none of the applications are "Active", then it stands to reason that the taskbar itself is the active application.

I didn't just say it I *did* it first. Of course, a better explanation of why we're getting differnet results is below:

I didn't take into account that the app would not be selected - because to me it makes perfect sense that to close an app you have to *select* it first.

Hence why my Alt+Tab / Alt+F4 solution works - Alt+Tab selects, Alt+F4 closes.

John's Alt+Tab, > let go(release) Tab > F4 repeatedlly until taskbar is empty or screen is blank is the closest there is to hotkey without too many F4's. (I tried it and I had to restart IE. They all poofed out before I knew it.)

But I have not given up on such hotkey. I know it's out there... and some one knows.

Where the heck is Shawn?
