Should I just give up on trying to fix this?

After 51, view of this question, no one has answered. Should I just assume that it's not fixable? It seemed like such a simple question originally. However, after 45 mins. with my ISP, it's still resolved.

I recently disconnected my router as I no longer need a network (only one computer). I attached my DSL modem directly to the computer and can connect fine manually when I click on the DSL connection icon.

I would like to have it automatically connect when I start the computer. I have the broadband set as my default and I have checked "always dial my default connection" in Internet options. I have also turned off the prompt for name and password. Also, the shortcut is in my start-up folder.

Basically, I just don't want the minor inconvenience of always have to manually connect. This forum has helped me before so I have hope you can help me again.

Reconnect the router even though only one PC is involved.

It does no harm and it will keep the connection open for you.

I cannot reconnect the router. I got rid of it since I don't need it anymore.

Hi moffett,
Have you tried this? Open Internet Explorer and click on Tools>Internet Options>Connections and tic "Never Dial a Connection". see below.

Bummer! Sorry to hear that. BTW did you reboot after making any changes for them to become effective? If you did, no need to answer. I'll think on it some more.

Why do you have to use a Broadband connection? Does your modem not have an interface? If it does you should be able to setup a PPP connection in the modem and it will remain connected.

What DSL modem do you use?
How is the modem connected to your computer?

My modem is the one AT&T gave me (Speedstream). It's connected to the computer with the cable that came with it (not sure what it's called - it connects like a telephone cord).

As far as the question about why I have a broadband connection - I don't really know the answer. That's just how it's set up to connect.

It sounds as if your modem uses a RJ45 connector, this is the normal network cable that people use. The RJ45 has 8 pins.

Have a look on the bottom or the back of your modem, this will identify which type you use.

You may need to log into your modem to tell it to connect to the internet automatically.
