Sharing sub folders

I am new to Vista and finding some issues on network sharing .

I created a folder "Movies" in my E drive: I then made that a shared folder for my network. Subsequently I created several subfolders with video clips. My media player detected the Movies folder but indicated there was no video content . I was surprised so I moved one of the video clips up one level but still no movie content was indicated. I rebooted the computer but no joy. In desperation I unshared and then reshared again the folder "Movies" ...now it works and I can see all the video folders and the files within them. Why is it behaving like this ? Is there someway I can set the permissions of the main folder so I dont have to unshare and reshare each time I add subfolder to the main folder ?

This also happened when I attach an ext drive to the computer running Vista. Some folders on this Ext HDD were shared folders when it was connected to another computer (running XP). Now these same shared folders are no longer shared when the ext drive is connected to the computer running Vista so I have share them again. Do I have to do this each time I connect the ext drive to a different computer ? Anyway to set folder permission on the ext drive so that they are shared no matter which two computers I connect them to?

Tks
