Setting up VPN on Vista

Hi all,

I am a relative noob, so bear with me!

I am trying to set up a VPN connection on Vista, and I am having a problem that seemed to be common circa 2007-2008 but that I can't find anything recent about. The problem is identical, and I have leeched the below text from another posting.

Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Centre

Set up a connection or network -> Connect to a Workplace.

I go through the add connection wizard, it tries to connect and all I get is "The
wizard cannot connect". I get 3 options, Try Again, Diagnose the
Problem, and Set up the connection anyway.

Clicking Try again, I get Setting up the connect.. and it just sits
there with the green status bar moving. I can click on Next which will
take me back to the "The Wizard cannot Connect" screen.

Clicking Diagnose the Problem seems to do absolutely nothing at all.

Clicking on Set up the connection, closes the dialog box and no vpn
connection is created.

I also tried creating a VPN connection with the "Don't connect now; just
set it up so I can connect later" and it brings me to the same spot and
no VPN connection is created."

Whilst I say early that this seems / seemed to be a common problem, I can't find a solution on the interweb. Common suggestions seemed to be ensure all Microsoft services are enabled (done) and disable firewall (done, at least for the Windows one - have wireless Cisco router poss with protection built in but can't see how that would stop connection being created). Anyone have any thoughts?

Many thanks in advance...
