Screensaver issues?

Okay so I'm not too tech-savvy so I will list my problem to the best of my abilities,

Recently, for literally no odd reason my screensavers decided to stop working.
I'm getting the "Incompatible with Direct3d" error message, but the thing is is that my screensavers have worked before on the exact same Drivers I'm using now.
I'm running Intel 965 Chipset Express Family graphics, with the latest drivers (also the ones recommended by Windows Update)

Any ideas?

Have you by chance installed a new game that might have forced a DirectX 9 install? Try grabbing the latest DirectX from Windows Downloads and see if it helps....

DirectX® 10

Hi xomb1e,

Internal graphics chips like your Intel 965 Chipset are using your memory and CPU directly for graphics which makes them absolutely horrible on Vista because its constantly sending data back and forth across the computer.

Instead of graphics data like the screensaver going from CPU > Graphics card like most computers, on internal chips its CPU> Memory> CPU> Memory> CPU> Memory> CPU> External. Its a dog breakfast and uses heaps more system resources than usual..
I think your Vista has forgotten its using a Internal graphics chip and is giving you the Direct3D error because the Intel Chipset doesn't actually support anything only the CPU currently does since you dont have an external graphic card.

Graphics cards are cheap these days and Vista gets a huge performance boot while using one.

Thanks for the info Steven,
Any recommendations for a good card within the 200-300 price range?

Agree completely

I had an Intel 965 machine for awhile and while I didn't have any screensaver issues (since I set screensaver to "None"), it does take a huge amount of graphics resources from the 965 to run Aero. Screensavers nowadays are strictly cosmetic as the burn in problems on monitors is long gone. I'd rather it go to black screen anyway and not use up any resources, which adds up to electrical usage.
I built another Vista machine and went 8800 GTS x 320MB and never looked back.
