Solved Screensaver file does not run from within system32 folder

Hey everyone. I'm having a problem getting a screensaver I made to run from the system32 folder. The screensaver is a .scr file, and it runs perfectly fine from any other folder when I double click it and what not. However, when I move it to my system32 folder and double click it, it just brings up a black screen.

The reason I have to have it in that folder is because I'm trying to use a sidebar gadget to display this screensaver on my desktop, and the gadget only accepts screensavers from the system32 folder.

Is this a matter of permissions or something?

Hello Fajam00m00, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Right click on the .scr file and click on Properties. Under the General tab, check to see if there is a Unblock button at the bottom. If there is, then move the file to the desktop, click on the unblock button to unblock the file, then move the file back to the System32 folder.

There's no unblock button. The general tab is just normal.

If it helps, the screensaver contains a flash file that connects to the internet to display information, so would system32 be blocking it because of that?

Could be, but I never used a screen saver that connect to the internet for information though. You might check to see if you have a security program that may be blocking it.

I don't think anything is blocking it. I made another screensaver with no internet properties, and it still didn't work.

Also, I think all this messing around with system32 was a bad idea . For some reason, my control panel doesn't open now, and when I try to right click things and bring up their properties menu, it takes like 5 seconds to come up...

You might do a System Restore using a restore point dated before all this to get back to where you were before.

I would be leary about that screen saver.

Thanks man, you're a lifesaver. I had to go into safe mode to even do the system restore. I think my permissions got corrupted too, because it kept saying I wasn't administrator, even though the list said I was.

Anyway, I fixed all that and deleted all traces of that screensaver. I guess it's just not worth it.
