Solved S.M.A.R.T. not working

I have a WD Caviar Blue WD5000AAKS ( http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=301 ).

I have enabled SMART in the BIOS like Lensman said. It said the drive supports SMART in the BIOS. I have used three programs to check SMART but none seem to work.

Seagate SeaTools - Test Unavailable

WD Data LifeGuard - SMART disk info not available for this drive or in accessable by this program

HD Tune - Health page is blank

I have attatched a screenshot from WD Data LifeGuard.

My SATA drive shows up as an SCSI and Lensman said it was normal. But is that preventing SMART from working?

OK, I have been racking my brains on this one all evening. Sometimes it is the most obvious things we miss, so...

Try a different SATA cable and make sure that it is plugged into SATA 1 on the board. (Socket closest to the bottom of the board.)

While you are changing the cable, check to be sure that there is no jumper on the back of your drive. If there is, remove it.

In your BIOS under the MAIN menu, you should see your drive identified next to the SATA 1 indicator. At this point, make sure that Serial ATA Devices are [ENABLED]. Into the SATA 1 section, you should make sure that SMART Monitoring is [ENABLED]. As long as you are in your BIOS, be sure that RAID is [DISABLED]. Save and exit.

If the above doesn't work, you may have to check for a firmware update on your drive and/or update your BIOS to Version 0501, if it isn't already. These last steps should only be done as a last resort. I have checked to confirm that all WD drives are SMART capable, so there is the possibility of a defective drive.

Anyway, let us know how it turns out.

My Computer

Thank you for taking the time to help me.

I have it on SATA 1. No jumper. Drive is id'd in SATA1.

Serial ATA Enabled. I changed SMART monitoring from Auto to Enabled.
nVidia RAID function Disabled.

BIOS is 0201. Ill try to update that and try with another cable.

I have a screenshot from my MB manual. All of the fields have three options: Auto, Disabled, Enabled. All are on auto except the last 2. Do any of the other options interfere with SMART?

I am having trouble updating to 0501. I have a screenshot.

The update utility says my board is M2N-MX where as the MB has M2N-MX SE written across it!!

Should i try a M2N MX BIOS ROM file?

EDIT: Maybe that IS my problem! My MB came with the wrong BIOS! I serached and found that there might be other M2N-MX SE boards that shipped with the wrong BIOS!

I finaly reached this page that might help me flash the corrct BIOS:
The Maximus Formula Thread - Help/OCing/Guide/Rampage conversion - XtremeSystems Forums

But ill wait for your opinion.

I successfully upgraded to 0501 using the methods in that page. But SMART still isn't working.

My drive still shows SCSI while my CD Drive correctly shows as ATA. Is there any way force my pc to see my SATA drive?

EDIT: I downloaded the nVidia nForce 430 drivers and it replaced the microsoft driver. Now i see a different one in Device Manager but the drive still shows SCSI. The drive is mentioned under Device 0 in the nVidia SATA properties.

Hey guys, my problem is partialy solved. SpeedFan run as Administrator can get the S.M.A.R.T. values! Although i cannot decode what it reads. :p

All that previous effort!

I have a screenshot, can someone help me with the temperature?

EDIT: never mind, i got the temps.

Now for my final question in this thread.

The HDD temp is around 37C is that ok longterm?

The GPU idle temp is 59C load is 70C(!!!) is that safe? (8600GT)

Please post the temperatures if you'd like some assistance with them.
Also, please let the analysis of the hard disk SMART status finish before using the results to make any decisions.
