I did quite a bit of searching and I can't find anyone else having this problem, but then again it is a rare occasion this happens. It is more an annoyance and my impatience for why I want to fix or at least understand why this is happening.
If I have a shortcut to a file and I then delete that file (not the shortcut), then if I want to manually redirect or delete the shortcut, I right-click the shortcut and go to properties or delete. However, in Vista, whenever I do this, all explorer windows completely lock up for 15-20 seconds before the right-click menu finally appears. Right clicking any other file will display the right-click menu instantaneously.
I know this is probably Vista trying to quickly find the correct file, but if that is the case I would prefer it not to do so. I personally could care less for the "Search for this file" feature or whatever it is called. I have never had an icon lose it's linked file unless it was something I did, in which case I know exactly where the file is and prefer to redirect it myself, as I don't trust such tasks to Microsoft, which rarely finds it anyway and could easily find the wrong thing and screw everything up.
Sorry to vent, but here's my request. Either help me stop Vista from ever doing this, or confirm/explain why it is doing this.
