Resizing Scanned Photos

articoli

New Member
My old computer has Windows XP. My new one has Windows Vista Home Premium x32.

When I scanned photos with XP on my HP1200 printer/scanner in Preview I could enlarge the photos. With Vista can't seem do that. Am I missing something here? I can scan in Paint or in Windows Photo Gallery, but in neither can I enlarge the photo.

Have you tried to scan at a different resolution. 600dpi will give you a good scan.
This will have the same effect as enlarging your image.

What your asking probably needs to have specific software that should come with the drivers.
You say it is a HP 1200, what type of HP 1200, i.e. laserjet, scanjet.

Tried going to 600dpi and even 1200dpi. It made no difference.

r u wanting to zoom or resize the pic. Here is a free program that can resize.
IrfanView - Official Homepage - one of the most popular viewers worldwide

I downloaded irfanview and opened the photo with it. I clicked on `double the size`, but ended up with the same size. Very frustrating.

The thing is, with XP when I went to scan preview it allowed me to increase the size just by clicking on the borders of the preview. The same does not happen now that I have Vista. I try to expand the borders, but the photo does not expand to fill the new border as it did with XP.

Hmm thats weird. Try setting the size with new size then after that press enter to goto fullscreen and see if the size is bigger.

Nope. It goes to full screen, but the size of the photo remains the same. I can use zoom in Paint to enlarge it, but when I when I send it to file, it files it in the original size. BTW, thank for trying to help.

Goto the properties of the photo and see if it's read only if it is uncheck it.

Hi articoli,

This can be done in 'Paint'. Click on 'View' and then 'Resize/Skew...' (or use the keyboard shortcut, Ctrl+W, which only works when there is an image present).

Note that the % values refer to the current size of the image. To increase the image size, input a value greater than 100 into each of the boxes under 'Resize'. Likewise, to reduce the image size a value less than 100 is required in the same boxes. The range of numbers acceptable is 1 - 500. To keep the same aspect ratio, the same value needs to be in each box. Click 'OK' when you have inputted the required values.
For example, if you want to increase the image from A4 to A3 you would use the value 141 and to reduce the image from A4 to A5 the value to use is 71.
Note that there will be a loss in image quality both ways, and that in order to achieve a reduction in size, some data will be permanently lost. Likewise, an increase in size will eventually lead to a blocky appearance of the image. For best results, the original image needs to be scanned in at as high a resolution (DPI) as possible.

Thanks. I tried that. It increases the image in Paint, but when I file it, it files in the original size.

Hi articoli,

That is very strange. It works OK for me. Here is the proof. This is a picture of the statue of David Lloyd George, a British politician of the early 20th century, outside Carnarvon Castle in Wales.

Notice the difference in file size, 1.46MB vs 89.0KB. Also note that the filename, 'Llandudno 080.JPG', is the same in both cases.

Thanks. I'll keep trying that option.

I also contacted Hewlett packard to see why I cannot increase the size while scanning as I could with XP. Apparently Vista is not compatible with that feature in the HP 1200 scanner. Good old Microsoft. We'll update to a version that does less.

My Computer

Hi articoli,

HP, like several other hardware manufacturers, have provided Microsoft with basic drivers to enable their hardware to function with Vista, albeit just to provide the basic functions. They could develop compatible drivers to enable full functionality, but they would rather you buy new products in order to gain this back. Basically, sales of new hardware MAKES the company money whereas merely providing drivers LOSES money for the company.

OK, I've figured out how to do it from the scanner. With XP in Preview I could expand the photo to fit the crop lines. I can't do it with Vista. However, in Preview I can reduce the crop lines to fit the photo Then, when it scans it comes out full size. Then I can do whatever I want in Paint or Irfanview.

Thanks for all of your input guys.
