Remote Desktop Help

Hi,
I am stumped as to an issue I am having using remote desktop. I have several machines in the office that have been using RD for a while without issue. All are XP SP 3 machines. I have a new Vista Ultimate machine that I am trying to remote to with an XP machine.

I have set up RD on the Vista Machine, Firewall is checked, forwarded to the correct port, set the port rule on the router...all the typical issues I am aware of. Everytime I try to connect I get "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator."

I am out of ideas. I can ping the Vista machine and I can remote from the vista machine to any RD enabled machine.

Please Help if possible!!!

I believe when you enable Remote Desktop on the Vista machine you need to check the 2nd radio button "Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure)"

If you haven't already update your XP machines with Remote Desktop client version 6

Hope that helps :)

Thanks. I have that option selected in Vista and am running RD Version 6 on my XP machines. Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm I thought it was going to be that ;)

How about the Advanced tab of the Remote Desktop client, under server Authentication select an option other than "Do not connect"

Just out of interest is the Vista machine on the same network as your XP machines?

Have you tried temporarily disabling the firewall to see if that's causing the issue.

And just to confirm you have the correct port number it should be 3389.

Hi,
The Vista machine is on the same network as the xp machines.
I did disable the firewall to check.

My first go I set the port to 3394 in the registry and then set the port forwarding rule on the router. I have since changed the port back to 3389 and chaged the port forward on the router accordingly. I checked netstat to make sure 3389 was listening. I also checked on canyouseeme.org and was visiable.

I tried changing both options on the advance tab other than "do not connect"

I am out of ideas so any ideas are helpful. Thanks again.

Since you're on the same network you shouldn't need to create any port forwarding rules on your router.

Try telnet to the RDP port of the machine, if it's connecting to the port ok then you should get a blank screen, when hitting a key it will exit. If the port isn't open you'll get an error. Eg telnet 192.168.1.1 3389

When you disabled the firewall did you do this on the Vista machine aswell as the XP machine(s)?

I did telnet 192.168.1.7 3389 and got the blank screen so I could connect.

I did disable the firewalls on both machines. I also disabled the AV software and tried that.

Like I said, I am stumped. I will try to connect from my home computer tonight. I don't think that will work, but...???

If you have any more suggestions I would appreciate it.

Sounds quite strange.

How quick does the error stating it can't connect pop up, immediately or does it try connection for a little while before flashing up the error message?

Worth the test from home too :)

Just as an update:

I finally am able to remotely connect. Am am not exactly sure what caused the problem, but the culprit was "The shield deluxe 2009". As mentioned earlier I disabled this AV program as a test to make sure my security software was not the issue. On a whim I unistalled it. Now everything works.

Thanks!!!
