I have managed to clean reinstall Vista from installation disks on Dell Inspiron - but on the Recovery Drive I have the old Vista - can anyone tell me if I should delete and do a clean install into the Recovery Drive?

Welcome
The recovery driver (restoration partition) is there for your convenience. If you ever have a problem that cannot be solved, use of the restoration partition is an easy solution. If you have restoration CDs, you the partition can be removed. The partition, by no longer even work, which is often the case after a reinstall. The choice is yours, but if mine, I would do a clean install and get rid of the partition.

That being said, you must exercise extreme care to insure that the CDs do not get damaged and that you have a valid product key number is needed.
If the CDs came from Dell as part of the reinstallation partition the key number is probably not necessary.
