Reboot problem--very annoying.

Hi, I have a strange problem someone may be able to help with.

When I reboot my computer through Windows the computer shuts down correctly, but then the monitor remains black and the bios starts beeping out the error code for "VGA not detected". Why would this be?
I am forced to press the power button and wait from 5 to 10 minutes to reboot normally.
(I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate x64, have an ASUS P6T Deluxe motherboard and a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 280. 800 watts ZION power supply)

Is this a BIOS settings or GPU problem? I already reseated the GPU. Could it be a power supply failure?

Thanks .

in the bios is it set to your graphics card or your onboard video?

it does sound like it could be a power issue but with an 800 watt psu unless it is going bad you should not be having an issue.

what do you mean by "in the BIOS is it set to graphic card or onboard video"?
Where in BIOS do I see that?

Thanks for helping.

Every bios is different so you'll probably just have to look for it.

As a tech I work on hundreds of different PC's, of all ages, brands and OS's.
Many PC's do not like to be "RE-Booted". They will hang in one manner or another.
The solution is always to never allow the PC to reboot from software, but do a complete shutdown followed by a COLD restart. That always works just fine.

You can drive yourself crazy trying to find the "WHY" of something like that.

In XP, Vista or Win-7 I use the following shortcut to RE-Boot my PC.

%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -r -t 00 -f

Copy and paste that line into a NEW Desktop shortcut and see if it works for you.
You can also change the -r (for reboot) to a -s, for a quick shutdown.
I share this quick shutdown shortcut for all my customers and it works great.
I put the shortcut icon right above the START button for some sort of continuity.

Good Luck,
The Shadow

Hi Shadow,

I did that shortcut you described, I shut it down but it did the same problem with the beeps , had to wait about 5 minutes to reboot again.

Well taking a SWAG at it, I'd have to say it's a motherboard glitch.
Most likely NOT a power supply issue.

It's Probably something you'll have to just live with. It's certainly not something worth having a stroke over.
If a program ask you if it's OK to "Reboot Now?" just say no and do the shutdown and cold restart on your own.

I could do that , but still I would have to wait at least 5 minutes to restart, and for the price I paid for this board and (the whole system for that matter) , I would like to see a better system. This is supposed to be a "high end" system.

I don't want to live with it , it's why I invested so much on this system, not to have small problems like this. ;)

This usually happens when you have a corrupt video driver and/or your monitor or HDTV does not have the correct drivers and it is using the Generic PnP drivers that come with Vista.

A way to fix it, at least, with my issue was:

  1. Download a fresh copy of both video & display drivers and copy into a folder of your choosing (you'll need it later so remember where you put them). Make sure you are downloading the correct driver (ie: 32 bit XP, 32 bit Vista, etc, etc).
  2. Start the PC or Restart and go into safe mode, uninstall the video & Monitor driver, restart.
  3. Once at the desktop, go into Device Manager and check under Monitors to see whether you have the correct drivers or just the Generic ones. If the latter, double click on it, click on the Driver tab and finally, click on the Update Driver, follow the prompt but make sure you DO NOT choose to install Recommended so it takes you to where your downloaded file is, choose the the monitor .INF file and you should now have the correct x64 driver.
  4. What I like to do with the video driver is slightly different and others have their way. Go to the downloaded file, right click on it and choose "Run as Administrator", follow the installation and it should ask you to reboot once everything is installed.
You should be golden but YMMV.

I did everything you said but my only problem was that the .INF driver from Sceptre for waterver reason wouldn't install on Vista 64 . I don't know if its not made for x64 as they only say Vista drivers on their website, I might have to call them and see if they have a driver especifically for Vista64.

But thanks for the information , anything else you think I should do?
