RAM question

I've got a question about Ram memory. Is it very important when you're gaming? Because when I play The Battle for Middle-Earth 2, which is a fairly old game with which my pc should easily be able to cope, I notice that when I put the graphics higher, everything goes very slow and not smooth at all. My RAM is only 1 GB big.

Vista runs much better with 2GB or more (preferably more) RAM.

Question - What graphics card are you using?

Yeah - don't break 'em! ;)

If you're forcing them - you're either putting them in wrong, or you've bought the wrong type. Be gentle and you won't have any problems.

And consult with your motherboard manual to see what types and capacities the memory slots support - and in what configuration (not all motherboards can deal with 2GB memory sticks, for example).

Sounds like your page file may be getting a hit with those specs, that is why your computer will be slowing down.

For your computer memory, if you are not sure what to get look here;
Memory upgrades, flash media, and usb storage at Crucial.com
or tell us your specs and we will give you advice.

If you can afford it get a gfx card with more memory. Newer games use more textures and it is these that take most memory on the GFX.

My advice is to to Crucial's site Memory upgrades from Crucial.com - About Crucial:Media Toolbox and use their system scanner tool to determine the best RAM for your computer. With Vista, you need 2GB or more of RAM.

I presume Roy69 is referring to a new graphics (gfx=??) card. The best ones now are the dual PCI Express 16 slotted cards which are extremely expensive to buy individually (like $1000 and higher) PLUS you have to have those two open PCI-X16 slots available. The only practical way (IMO) to buy them is to purchase a new computer equipped both with them and a high end processor suitable for such gaming. If you desire to spend that kind of money, you are operating far above me. ;)

Crucial (in my experience) is a very reliable manufacturer and source for RAM. Use their scanner tool to scan your computer so that they can recommend the correct upgrades. Hopefully, they can make available three choices; good, better, and best. These will differ by performance and price.

crucial is reliable.
As for gfx any card with 512mb will be a big inprovement.
2gb of ram will also help out the system.

What kind of cards are you referring to that is 1000 bucks a pop? The 9800 GX2 from nVidia has dual processors with 1GB DDR 3 Ram on board. It fits in one slot. now you CAN get two off them and run SLI, and that is like having 4 vid cards lol. But it only runs $599. (crap, 579 on newegg with an additional 30 dollar rebate. I should have waited.......)
