Question before doing it..

Ok..So my friend thinks im a total pc nerd -___-
So he asked me, what if he installed win7 over vista, Like he uses win7 dvd and installs it over the vista partition.
Personally i never tried it, because it sounds STUPID...But it really stumped me..
I m thining that the window 7 will corrupt the vista files, and he wont be able to boot..
But IDK..Anyone know??

He can install as upgrade over Vista. But it is better to do a clean install - even with an upgrade disk. That will be a lot less problematic. Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version - Windows 7 Forums

Often a Custom Install will work. At least it works a lot more often than an in place upgrade. Custom install of W7 32 bit over Vista 32 bit went fine. I tried the same with both being 64 bit and my start menu and a few other things were pretty messed up. If 32 bit then a Custom install may be worth a try. That's the one where you end up with a gigantic Windows.old folder left over.

edit: the custom install takes longer but sometimes it may be convenient to have many of your old files in Windows.old so you can drag them out later on. If you have external drives or other storage then it's not as attractive.
