Question about RAID 0

Please forgive me if this is posted in the wrong area.

I have a set up with RAID 0. I want to install Ubuntu on an external drive. I have read a post in the Ubuntu forums about disconnecting all internal hard drives and only using the attached external drive to install the OS. My question is if I disconnect the RAID-ed drives, will the RAID remain intact after the external drive OS install and the reconnection of the RAID-ed drives? Or will I damage the RAID and have to reinstall my Windows OS?

I hope this makes sense.

System specs: ASUS M2A-VM mobo, Athlon 64x2 5400, ATI RAID utility, Vista Home Premium x64, Catalyst 8.9

RAID will remain intact. I'm running both Vista Ultimate x64 and Ubuntu 8.10 on the same drive.

Thanks for the reply, but I'm not trying to install Ubuntu on the same drive, but on an external one. The Ubuntu forum states to disconnect all internal drives and only use the external drive. The specific reason I want to do it this way is that I do not want to have to hassle with the GRUB, nor do I want to have to install EasyBCD or some other software to have to reconfigure the Vista Boot Loader. If I do it this way, all I have to do is to boot straight from the USB drive. I've done this same thing on my laptop with the major difference being that I don't have RAID on my laptop.

I haven't been able to find anything in the Ubuntu forums concerning this specific setup (installing on an external with an internal RAID 0 config)

Have you tried the installer version of ubuntu? You can then select what drive you want to install into and no need for GRUB loader :)

To do so download the ISO image of Ubuntu 8.04 or 8.10 and mount it/burn it and insert into your CD/DVD drive. Browse the content of the CD and open up umenu.exe. You can then select where to install and other options.

...and absolutely, positively no GRUB? Cool.

Using this method, I assume, I do not have to disconnect anything, right?

Thanks for the information.

One last thing: what's the difference between umenu.exe and wubi.exe? I mean, I have read about Wubi, but is there a difference between the two?

Nevermind-- googled it and read up on it.
thanks for the info

I was gonna say all you had to do was disable the harddrive channels in the BIOS ....

Why not just change the boot order in the BIOS?
