Programs timeout or move to background after update

Bear with my limited vocabulary about computers.

My system updated overnight and now I have a problem with programs (Excel, Chrome, doesn't matter which) timing out, or moving to the background. It times out after 30 seconds to a minute. It's not going to sleep, they still remain visible and up front, but if you try to scroll or type, it won't let me. I have to click somewhere on the page to begin typing again.

I've had to click this dialogue box 5 times so far to continue typing this out.

In Chrome, if I try to watch a video full screen, the internet moves to the background and knocks me out of full screen.

I'm not sure what to do at this point. It is very aggravating having to click the screen every minute to continue scrolling or typing.

Ok Rich, I've done a system restore to 2/8. It's still behaving the same way.

How many updates were put on? If it's less than 20 I think I'd uninstall them all one at a time and see if something starts working better.
