problems with UAC

Okay. Here's my story:

I was initially experiencing an issue where when I logged in, I'd get the error message: "unable to load user profile". A new profile would be started everytime I logged in. I tried several recommended solutions, and ended up following:
How to Copy User Data to a New User Profile
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811151

After this step, my new user profile had the majority of my previous settings. I had to modify some things though.

I was upset to see that my network connection icon in the status bar had a red X over it. With the messages: "access is denied" and "connection status: unknown". Despite these warnings, I had internet access.

I searched many forum posts to try and find a solution. None of the posts found had a successful solution. Finally I came across one post (I don't remember where) that suggested turning off User Account Control.

I was unable to disable UAC from my new user profile. (Incidentally, I was also unable to download updates, and that symptom might be related). My new user profile is an administrator account. So I logged into my previous broken user profile (also an administrator account), disabled UAC, and rebooted.

Shockingly enough, my new user profile was properly displaying my network connection status, including internet access. Network and Sharing Center showed the connection information (instead of the previous "access denied"). I wondered it this resolved the solution, so I reactivated UAC and rebooted.

Unfortunately, the original "access denied" behavior with regards to my network continued again.

So for now I have UAC disabled, and my network and sharing center (and network icon) behave as expected.

However, I'd like to fix this issue. I'm posting in Security forum because this seems to be a UAC issue, rather than a network issue.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can reactivate UAC and still be able to have access to items such as network status and windows update?

thanks,
fb

My first question would be, do you have a system restore point from before the problem?

I also suffered from this problem when I was trying to edit my SAM file. This caused a lot of problems, including your problem, which almost crippled my laptop. I ended up re-installing windows because it is very difficult to fix what had gone wrong with my UAC. If you haven't got a system restore point then maybe you should consider re-installing windows.
