Problem with updating my HD Realtek Driver

Windows Vista Update says I have an optional update for my Sound Driver - Realtek RTL 8168 9 C (P) / 8111 (P) Family PCI-E GBE NIC.

When I go to update it, the update fails and comes up with error code: 80070103

When I click get help with this error, it tells me to update it manually.

But when I go to Driver Manager in the Control Panel, It says that I have the most up to date version for the driver.

What do I do? Something is obviously wrong.

Well for starters this,

Realtek RTL 8168 9 C (P) / 8111 (P) Family PCI-E GBE NIC

is your onboard ethernet, not the onboard sound. If you want to update the driver(s) do not get them through Windows Update, get them directly from Realtek. You can find the links to the latest audio driver here,

and you can get the ethernet driver from Realtek as well.

P.S. If everything is working as it should you don't need to update the driver(s). If you don't wish to update then while in WU just right click on the offered driver and select "Hide Update" and you won't see it again.

ooo my bad. lol. I wasn't quite sure exactly what it was. lol. yeah everything is working fine (right now) and I think i'll just hide the update for now. Thanks for letting me know. lol.

Please try these steps I am not sure but you can check it out.

Updating Driver:

1. Click on start and type Device Manager (devmgmt.msc) and hit Enter.
2. Click on the + sign left to the device.
3. Right click on the device name and select Update Driver.
4. Select the option called “Browse my computer for driver software”.
1. Select the option “Let me pick a driver from the list”.
2. Select the compatible driver from the list and click “Next”.
OR (If it doesn’t work)
1. Click on browse and navigate the location to “C:\windows\winsxs”.
2. Click on next.
5. Wait for the installation to complete.
6. Restart the computer to take effect the changes.

As a rule of thumb, you DO NOT let Windows update upgrade your Sound/Video/Ethernet drivers... those need to be done straight from the Manufacturer since you, most likely first, need to uninstall the current drivers or some corruption may occur.
