Problem with my DVD-drive

Hello!

So, the problem is, that my DVD-drive doesn't read disc's. The drive I'm using is TSSTcorp SH-S223Q ATA, so a Samsung DVD-drive. When I bought it, it read fine, but not anymore. It doesn't read even bootable disc's (I tried Vista Ultimate x64). I've tried upgrading firmware from B00 to B03, but it didn't help.

I had a similar problem when I bought this computer in August 2008. My DVD-drive read the disc's fine for couple weeks or so and then it stopped working. Then I replaced it with this drive (It's not the same model). This one worked fine for a month or two and stopped working, so it's been couple of months not functioning. I just did a fresh install of Vista yesterday and the problem is still here.

What should I do next?

Thanks in advance!

I can't boot from bootable disc's. As I said, I tried booting from the Windows Vista Ultimate x64 disc, but it didn't boot from it and it won't show it in Vista.

I did the fresh Vista install from another DVD-drive connected to USB via adapter.

Hi Poro,

Will the drive recognise ANY DVDs at all? If you have a copy of XP or Win98SE (both of which are CDs as opposed to Vista, which is a DVD), then try to see if you can boot from them. Some, but not all, DVD drives actually have 2 lasers - one for DVDs and one for CDs - and it is possible for one or the other (or both) to fail.

have you tried deleting the upper and lower filters in your registry? Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

might not help but its worth a shot
There is not worth to do that in this way -he has trouble even with with booting bootable disks (read again post 3) where any system settings, properties are without any meaning -only BIOS or hardware components play roles there.May should he try update BIOS? - I don't know.

Well, I tried Theme Hospital (Classic!), which is a CD, but it didn't work. Neither did some DVD's I tested.

I checked the BIOS and the only updates that were available were fixing chassis fan problems with S3 cards and Asus ExpressGate, so I don't think the BIOS update is necessary.

Check in BIOS and in Device mngr is the DVD drive is listed. Also, try updating the DVD drive firmware from TSST website.

That the way check it in Device manager and then in BIOS and if it is not try to swap the Sata or the IDE cable on the Motherboard and check if it the Sata or the IDE Port on the Motherboard is causing the Problem.
OR
If your using the same Cable then try to use a good known cable for the Drive.

It shows up both in BIOS and Device Manager. I updated the firmware yesterday from B00 to B03 which is the newest. It didn't help.

Then it seems that the Read feature in your dvd drive is no more working. Still before replacing the dvd drive, try doing a system restore or probably a clean reinstall. OR if you have another computer, try connecting this dvd drive to the other computer to diagnose the problem.

Yes, that's the problem, but why did two different brand/model drives broke? What am I doing wrong? This is a clean install, so it shouldn't be a problem. I did it on the weekend. I'll try to connect it to some other comp.

It could not be a problem with two drives at the same time as such, As you have already reinstall the OS, i would recommend try connecting these drives on another computer to diagnose the issue. It could also be faulty motherboard SATA connectors or maybe a faulty SATA cables.:geek:
