Problem uninstalling an old USB driver

I've installed a USB driver for my Sony video cam (after changing its setup.exe compatibility to WinXP SP2 otherise it won't be installed) and then decided to uninstall it but this error message "USB driver cannot be installed in the current version of windows" keeps displaying and won't let me uninstall it!

Any clue?

if you really want it out, manually find and delete it. make sure not to delete the wrong file, or you'll mess up your cp. Good Luck.

How is that possible? Where should I look for this file?

Try running the *installer* again just as you did before and see if it lets you remove the driver....

I did but it keeps installing it again and again. I also tried looking for it in the device manager to disable it but no success.

Is there a way to do that from the registry or system files?

If you installed a driver for it it is probably in C:\Windows\System32 - but removing it is going to be a chore, because you have no idea what was written where, how many files are involved, and where in the registry it will make reference to said file(s). I'd contact SONY and see if they have a driver removal tool.

I take it you are using Sony's software CD supplied with the camera?
Does your camera have a USB port, indeed what model is it?
Sony does not warrant the camera software for Vista 64-bit. On my machine it kept screwing up an essential Vista file requiring use of the Vista DVD-ROM repair utility.
Do not use the Sony software at all.
To get files over, for my HDR-SR8E (AVCHD HDTV disk storage) I just plugged the camera into the computer with the USB lead, told the camera to connect to the computer, Vista recognised a new USB mass storage device, I copied to PC disk the root folders of the camera disk, then I disconnected by telling Vista to safely retire the device then telling the camera to come out of the computer mode.
For me, the AVCHD files don't play because Windows Media Player version 11 does not have the right codec, and I will not connect to the internet and allow it to search for one. I am later getting Sony Vegas Pro 8 video editor and that has the ability to play.
I copied my files again, to a Western Digital MyBook external USB 500Gb disk drive, which is by default formatted as FAT32, then plugged that into my Play Station 3 and the PS3 played the files fine. So this works - for the SR8E anyway.

Actually I didn't know that I should initiate the link from the camera. I'll try that and let you know.

You do not know whether the files have been copied without corruption until you succeed in running them somewhere.

You do not NEED a PS3 to test so long as your PC is set up correctly to run Sony's AVCHD files then fine, do it. Mine is not. So I had to put the files on a FAT32 formated USB disk and plug that into the PS3, cos the PS3 reads FAT32 partitions and has the wherewithal to run Sony AVCHD files.

Et voila.
