Problem Code is 39 -- what does that mean?

I am using Windows Vista Ultimate (Commemorative Edition) x64, which was installed roughly two weeks ago. Everything was working fine and then, one day (9/21/08 at 1:19 p.m. to be precise) I lost the ability to use my speakers (Logitech X530) as well as my printer (HP OfficeJet G85). Under the "Problem Reports & Solutions," I received this message:

"Windows was able to successfully install device driver software, but the driver software encountered a problem when it tried to run. The problem code is 39."

I received the exact same message for both my audio and my printer. Also, if I go to "Sound" (Playback and Recording tabs) it says, "No audio devices are installed." Everything appears to be connected properly.

Can anyone explain why both my speakers and my printer were working fine one day and then, all of the sudden, they just quit? I cannot think of anything drastic which may have occurred. Has anyone else had anything similar occur?

There are several causes of Code 39 errors: •A required device driver is missing. •A required binary file is corrupted. •There is a problem with the file I/O process. •A driver that is referencing an entry point in another binary file is unable to load.Recommended resolution

Reinstall the drivers for this device.

Uninstall and reinstall the driver

Uninstall the driver from Device Manager, and then scan for new hardware to install the driver again.

You may be prompted to provide the path of the driver. Windows may have the driver built-in, or may still have the driver files installed from the last time that you set up the device. However, sometimes, it will open the New Hardware Wizard which may ask for the driver. If you are asked for the driver and you do not have it, you can try to download the latest driver from the hardware vendor’s Web site. 1.On the device Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Uninstall. Follow the instructions.2.Restart your computer.3.Open Device Manager, click Action, and then click Scan for hardware changes. Follow the instructions.

After re-install Audio drivers..

1. Click Start, All Programs and then HP Software Setup.
2. Select the Intel Chipset Installation Utility from the list of items and follow the prompts to install the software.

First I would like to thank you both for taking the time to help me with this problem. Unfortunately I failed to mention that we have been unable to uninstall or reinstall drivers.

Additional information which may be important is that we have three computers networked and moved the printer to another computer, so the printer problem has been resolved. We still have the audio issue, though.

Admittedly, I am not very well-versed in building a computer, but with the help of someone who is, we've tried almost everything we can think of. We recently did a system restore to an earlier point in time (10 days ago) without success. Under the DEVICE MANAGER>STORAGE CONTROLLERS, it lists another device that isn't functioning (A6RKXV1Y IDE Controller).

We are running Vista Utimate x64 on this system. Here is everything listed in my Device Manager:

The "WARNING ERRORS" all state the same thing: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)." Unfortunately, we cannot install drivers at all.
