Problem after installing SP2 on Vista x64.

I can reboot all day long with no problems but when I do a shut down I will often get a BSOD with Stop: 0x0000007E. The only way I can get the computer to boot up is to do a system restore from the Vista install disk. Of course I am then back to SP1.

Does anyone have a idea what could be causing this?

I appreciate the response but I don't have the BitLocker Drive Encryption feature. I am using Vista Home Premium which does not have that feature.

Do you have Catalyst 9.5 drivers installed? I was getting that bugcheck so I went back to 9.4 and haven't had it since.

If you attach a .dmp file from C:\Windows\Minidump , it may give a better clue what's triggering it.

Yes I have Catalyst 9.5 drivers. Thanks for the clue.

Right now it is back to BSOD after Microsoft Support helped me install SP2 again. They have bucked the problem over to Research and are supposed to call me between 9-11 am in the morning. I will suggest that to them or if they don't call back I will try rolling back the drivers.

Here is where I am at present. Microsoft screwed up the thing so much that I am having to do a complete rebuild. Fortunately I had everything important backed up. I have Vista with SP1 loaded and I am installing fixes now. Microsoft is supposed to call later to install SP2 with me to make sure it works for me. I am staying with Catalyst 9.4 drivers for now.

Hmmm....

I wouldn't necessarily blame the 9.5 Cat drivers. I'm running them with SP2 just fine. I also haven't had any gaming issues with either installed. I've also haven't noticed any chatter about problems between the 9.5 Cat drivers and Vista SP 2, at least none here...CATALYST Drivers - Rage3D Discussion Area. So...???

You might want to keep an eye open for "other" problems.

What was causing the problem was a USB device I had plugged in. Microsoft Update would down load a program which would activate the device and then Windows would download a driver for it and then Vista SP2 would BSOD on reboot.
