Solved Printer won't print

I've tried everything I know of to get my Brother intellifax 4100 (USB) to print. It shows up as a printer icon and even says it's the default printer. But when I try and print nothing happens. No document even shows up in the print cue. At first it self-installed (but still wouldn't work) then I installed it on the virtual usb printer port. Don't really know what I'm doing in that area. In any case, it says it's properly installed but it acts like it's not even there. Everything was fine on the XP system - sorry we switched.

Help!

Did you restart after the driver installed?
Have you downloaded/installed the Vista driver/software disk for it?

This is a common issue with brother. Download and Install

I've followed those directions both when I was trying to connect through a networked XP and then when I connected directly. The driver download is brofa410.IN_ which Vista won't use. It says it's looking for .INF. But when I rename the driver brofa410.INF it still won't recognize it as the driver.

Hi,

For Printing Issues – Unable to Use/install Printers, Try the Following Steps:

Note: (i)Before Trying this Step Make Sure Printer Software and Drivers are Uninstalled from the Computer .
(ii) Create Restore point after uninstalling the Printer software and drivers.

Step 1: Download the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools From link - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9D467A69-57FF-4AE7-96EE-B18C4790CFFD&displaylang=en

Step 2: Save it desktop and Run the Installation in XP sp2 Compatibility mode With Admin privileges.

Step 3: After the Installation Navigate to c:\Program files\Windows Resource kits\tools

Step 4: Find a .exe file Which Says Cleanspl and Run In XP sp2 compatibility mode With admin Privileges.

Step 5: Wizard Will Prompt to select the Computer name to clean the registry spooler entries – Use the Select option to find the computer name.

Step 6: Click on Clean spooler option to clean the entries in registry.

Step 7: While deleting the Entries Make sure the default Registry entries (BJ Language Monitor, Local Port, PJL Language Monitor, Standard TCP/IP Port, USB Monitor) Should not be deleted When Prompted by Wizard and Rest of the Entries can be deleted.

Step 8: Restart the computer and Re install the Printer software and Drivers.

Here are the fax 4100 Vista drivers from brother:
X64 Vista driver (attached x64A): or Download and Install
x86 (32-bit) Vista driver (attached x86A): or Download and Install

note-32-bit Vista will not use a 64-bit driver and vice-versa, and you cannot install an XP or 2000 driver in Vista. You cannot "modify", and run an unsigned driver in 64-bit Vista-unless you disable signed driver Check at startup, or download 3rd party software. to make sure exactly what version of Vista you are using check in "System Info":

Start> in search bar type, sys> click the program "system information"

It still doesn't recognize the uncompressed file as an .INF file...???
Are you following the instructions given in the walkthrough from Brother? There are 13 pages, and the .inf driver issue is in there (.inf is the xp driver), and is linked.

READ THIS PAGE BY PAGE AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS
For additional information, please check the document from here
" Page 9
Attention!
When the printer that this Brother original driver sets up is shared with another OS (Windows®
2000/XP or Windows Server™ 2003) , another kind of printer driver needs to be installed.
Please go to the next section to continue..."

The instructions are for sharing a printer connected to Vista with a networked XP. I have the reverse. My printer is connected to the Vista. I'll get a longer USB cable and connect the printer to the Vista and re-try using these instructions. (unless you have other instructions)

Thank you very much for all the help!

I could not get my printer to print applications like PDF and Office. I found the problem in the printer set up. I am running Vista 64. You go to the windows start logo, select settings and printer under printers right click select properties then advance settings. You have to have send data to print spooler if you send directly to printer you will not be able to print. I do not know if this will fix your problem but if the printer will print a test page and not documents I would book bet that that would be the problem.
