can someone please help me? ive looked all over the net but i cannot seem to solve the prob.

2 days ago i booted up the laptop and it displayed a message saying

'windows sockets initizalization failed'

noticing that there was no internet i presumed the two were linked. however not only is there no net but no networks or anything to do with a network.

my solution was to perform a system restore which wouldnt work because i had to do some disc check when i booted up next which i did however i still couldnt do the restore and now i started getting a box up that appeared whenever i opened various programs. the box read

'c:\windows\system32\msimtf.dll is either not designed to run on windows
or it contains an error'

anyways i got on to the dell forums and they recommened i perform repair computer from the boot screen via f8. i did that and the computer thinks its performed a system restore however the problems still persist.

can anyone help me please? i dont want to reinstall vista and i also think i cannot because my disc is older than sp1.

thanx

Error Message:

command : Windows Sockets initialization failed: group
Explanation:
This error can occur if the Wsock32.dll or Winsock.dll file is missing, is damaged, or has been replaced by a sockets interface belonging to a third-party protocol stack.
User Action:
Remove and reinstall the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). If you continue to receive this message, contact the vendor of the third-party protocol stack's interface and verify that the stack is compatible with Wsock32.dll or Winsock.dll.

the only solution i could find for this is

Start > Find > Files or Folders , type in winsock .
Go to where the file is located .
Start > Find > Files or Folders , type in regsvr32
Drag and drop winsock.dll onto the regsvr32 icon.
You should get a message saying "winsock.ocx registration successful" or something
to that effect.

and as its not exactly helpful id suggest a windows repair or even a format, you could also try reinstaling your network drivers
