Hello people. I run vista64 ultimate, 4 giga ddr2 and on system properties those 4 giga of ram are shown, but on sidebar gadgets that are used to show ammount and use of ram is only shown 3581 mb of ram. I tried several different gadgets and results were the same...3581. I realy have no idea whats going on. So if someone knows....

Type "system" in the search bar on the start menu and then click on system information.

On the first page under Total Phsyical Memory, what does it show?

According to several things I've reag your okay. With 32 bit systems some of your memory space is reserved for hardware and such and you actually will only have access to 3.2 to 3.5 gigs. With SP1 installed you can see total memory, like you do, but you only can use 3.5 of it. The only way to get past the limitation is to change to a 64 bit OS

Edit: opps nevermind me. I wasn't paying attention and se you are using Vista 64 so someone else will have to help.

This is where things get technical...
On some (most/all?) motherboards memory is not remapped, they just exclude memory areas where things like raid bios, vga memory and such is mapped. That results in memory being "lost". If that's the case, there's really nothing to do about it. It doesn't prevent you from buying more memory, but you'll always end up with a bit less than you have installed.

Some software will show the usable amount of memory, some other will show the amount of installed memory.. That's just the way things work.

you didn't recently update your bios or add some new hardware by any chance? Another possibility is maybe some recent update to vista caused this?

Since even the gadjets are showing more than 3 gigs I would assume that the sticks are good. If a stick failed I'd expect the amount shown to be even smaller

I have a RAM issue too, when Windows Vista Ultimate X64 is idle, and I take a look at the sidebar, it shows the RAM meter at 48%...
Same as the poster, I have 4GB DDR2 memory.
When I take a look at taskmanager, and I count all the RAM used by processes in the processes tab, I only count 350MB...
How is it possible that 2GB is always used?

I don't have problems with my CPU, even when playing CoD4 high, it only uses about 6 to 10 percent.

How is it possible that 2GB is always used?

It's used by the OS for disk cache and other system related things. If something you run (like a game or an application) need the memory, the OS will release it.
