I have a HP Pavillion dv6 series notebook PC, Windows Vista home premium, 32 bit OS. My DVD drive is: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT20L ATA Device. My dvd drive is not regcognising any form of dvd or cd and when I go into my computer it is not even listed! When I go into device manager my dvd drive has a ! in a yellow triangle and when I click it it states:

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged (code 19). Click ' check for solutions' to send data about this device to microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

I click this but there is no solution offered. I googled my dvd drive and downloaded software that would scan my computer to see if there was any updates my computer needed. Funnily enough, nearly everything bar my dvd drive needed updating, so I did not proceed with the updates.

I have had this problem once before and i took my computer to a repairman but he said all he could do was reformat my computer and hope for the best! It worked for a time but 6 months later and I am having the same problem again! I really do not want to reformat my computer everytime I have this problem, is there another solution? I would really appreciate some help with this matter, thank you very much!

Just to add to the problem, I have tried to uninstall my driver and install it again in device manager but the installation failed. I have tried looking through the HP website but find little help. I do not know what else to do!

I only know a limited amount about how to find the stats for computers, this is the best I could do, sorry.
In the device manager did you select the drive and try the update driver option? If that doesnt work i would remove the driver and manually install the the most up to date one.

You could also try sfc /scannow command in the command promt to see if it will fix any corrupt files you may have.

2 things to try first, first use system restore to backup your currant settings then,

1, uninstall the drive from device manager, then shutdown the pc, disconnect the power and data cable from drive and then boot. shutdown again and then reconnect and restart. this may reinstalled the drive with updated registy settings.

2nd, method d/load and run this reg file Vista Optical Drive Fix.zip - Windows Live
