Photoshop CS3 and X64 Service pack 1

Hi Everyone,

I have recently installed SP1 to my Vista X64 machine (dual core 6700 o/c to 3ghz, 8 gb ram, raptor 10K 74gb system harddrive, raptor 10K 150gb large file and partitioned PS scratch disk, 340 gb 'everthing else' harddrive, nvidia 8800 640mb gts videocard, wacom A3 wide table) and I have noticed really strange behaviour in PS CS3. It generally feels slower and when I work on larger files (183x120cm @300dpi) it's much slower than pre-sp1 on the same file size.

The odd thing I have noticed is that it crashes (fades to white - not responding ) when I use the transform scale tool and when I add a Layer blending effect ( drop shadow / gradient etc ) it never did this before as it used to render it instantly.....now it takes a least 30 sec to 1 min to create and/or recover from the 'not responding' white out screen.

Has anyone else found this with PS CS3 and Vista SP1? - It's very annoying especially as I had the system perfect before the SP1 upgrade. How can I fix this?

any ideas

Chris

I've also noticed more disk access while working in PS. Despite having 8gb the scratch file seems to be used more than usual.

Has no one else had the same experience?

I have CS3 and Vista 64bit sp1 and it works very well (better than b4 SP1).

EDIT: I have tried the same operations that crash your pc with a file .psd 250mb larger and it was perfect.

tried with your exact settings and added ALL effects to boot with everything tweaked = no problems (bit slow as expected....but what the hell has you working at 21k pixels in ps??????)

I also started up Indesign and created a sra3 file with no impact. (with PS still open in the bg)

have you got ur prefs set up good for PS? if so, its a definite re-install job for PS

Thanks for the replies.

I'll try a reinstall in the morning.

BleepingCrazy, I'm working on large format Fine Art digital prints...They must be at print resolution which is causing a few problems as the largest is 550 x [email protected]'m guessing PS wasn't really designed for this kind of output but as far as I can see there are no alternatives...

My prefs were the same as before....separate scratch disk and memory set to 80%. But I sometimes have the issues when working files that are [email protected]ding annoying!!! The systems always recovers but I sometimes have to wait a few minutes for 'save to web' to activate too....Eh - what's that about (on a 2mb file)!

A few examples on my website.. Christopher Farrell Portfolio 2008

cheers

Chris

Well is seems the UAC was causing an issue with photoshop.......everything seems snappy again.

Roll on 64bit PS CS4. Maybe that'll have better performance and vista compatibility.

to set this option permanently for any program, right click on the program icon > compatibility and only select the "run as admin" tick box. this way u don't get the annoying prompt.
