Photoshop CS-4 incompatability 64-bit Vista

Bought Gateway 64-bit Vista in 1/09, installed Photoshop CS-4 and it has never worked. (9 months of frequent, blue-screen crashes with any fairly large Photoshop files, but also random crashes in everything from simple OS operations to internet operation.) Had computer back to Gateway 4X, and Re-installed CS-4 just as often - bugged both customer service people repeatedly, and they simply blame each other.

Tried all sorts of trouble-shooting ops with CS-4 preferences. e.g. Disabled Open GL Drawing - no change.

Installed a new NVidia 9500 Graphics card, and still crashing.

Someone suggested the problem might be fonts - I did install some, will try uninstalling - but don't know what's original and don't want to re-install the operating system yet again.

Can anyone tell me which fonts are original to Vista Home Premium? Thanks in advance for your help.

Im assuming you have quicktime installed. You know that CS-4 is only certified for 32 bit, right?

What does event viewer say? (type event viewer in search) goto windows log>applications. look for errors (red x in left column) that mention CS-4, or something relevant to it

Have you run a sfc (system file checker) to verify your system files? (type scf /scannow from cmd window)

Or you could try a repair install if you have the vista dvd

Do you have a backup you could restore from?

Thank you, Ken. I do have Quick Time. Some customer service people at Adobe said CS-4 was not certified, but no other version of Photoshop would work at all, and since that is what I mainly work with and some senior tech at Adobe claimed CS-4 would definitely work with the system I went ahead and purchased the program.

The system crashed as I was looking at the event viewer. At the time I had only Word and Mozilla open. There was nothing listed under critical in the event viewer, under error it said: 41692 and the following number:
D907090001001500160000000D00A901D907090002001600030000000D00A901080700003C0000000100000008070000000000002C0100000100000000000000.

When I go to help it says: There is no additional information about this issue in the Error and Event Log Messages or Knowledge Base databases at this time. I have Restore DVD's from Gateway and have done that twice. I am a fairly inexperienced user, but willing to continue trouble shooting. Should I pursue the issue of fonts? I did install some, but just don't know which to uninstall. Otherwise, I have done very little customizing other than adding the Acer monitor. I'm even using the lousy printer that came free with the system to make sure there is no incompatibility.

Will try scf scan, but what is the cmd window? Advice much appreciated.

Photoshop CS4 is certified for both Vista 32 & 64-bit

sygnus is correct. I read it wrong. thanks for the correection

seashell: cmd window is what used to be called a dos window. If you type cmd in search a window will pop up, and in that you type sfc /scannow

zigzag, when trying sfc/scannow receive message that I must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility - don't know the workaround for setting myself up as the admin.

Someone suggested Windows Service Pack 2 - Could it possibly help?

Also, in spirit of crossing all bridges, where to find list of standard fronts for Windows Vista Home Premium? Thanks, shell

Are you logged on as a standard user, or as admin? If you can log on as admin that will let you run sfc. If you cant there is a tutorial for running an elevated command prompt here Elevated Command Prompt - Windows 7 Forums

its pretty easy but let me know if you run into problems. Vista fonts, IM not on a vista box right now but I suspect they are available on the dvd. someone running vista is going to have to tell you

Hello, Logged on as admin. ran scan and it said it found errors but couldn't fix them all. Said report is in CBS.log file but I don't know how to find it in C drive.

I am running Adobe CS4 on this crippled Gateway dx4200 that only has 2gb of ram instead of the original 6gb. Photoshop, Illustrator, and all seem to work fine. Vista Home Premium 64 bit. The memory in the Foxconn motherboard had to be reduced to avoid instant BSOD (blue screens on boot up).
